Marquis de Pombal

The statue honours Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, prime minister of Portugal, who was later given the title of Marquis de Pombal. He was responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the disastrous earthquake and resulting tsunami of 1755.
